State Staff Travel Reimbursement Programs

May 15, 2018 in Current Update

The MESC Organizers want to decrease the obstacles States may face in sending employees to the Conference. We are also interested in broadening State exposure to the information presented at the Conference and have developed the three opportunities outlined below to assist States with travel expenses. The MESC Organizers provide reimbursement for travel costs to the MESC, hotel, registration fees and meals during times when the MESC is not offering meals.

State Decision Makers
Through this program, we are committed to reimbursing the travel expenses and registration fee for one State employee per State. Preference will be given to State Personnel who have never attended the MESC as well as for State Personnel whose responsibilities are broader than the MMIS, for example a State Chief Information Officer, Medicaid Director, or other key decision maker.

Poster Session Presenters
One State staff person per State who submits a Poster Session abstract and participates in the Thursday evening session is eligible for participation in this program.

HI-TECH 90/10 Funding
States with eligible HI-TECH funding are eligible to submit a request for 10% of the registration and travel costs to participate in the MESC up to a maximum amount of $1,000 per State.

Announcing Cathy O’Neil – Keynote Speaker at MESC 2018

May 11, 2018 in Current Update

We are pleased to announce Cathy O’Neil author of the New York Times bestselling Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy, which was also a semifinalist for the National Book Award will be the keynote speaker at the MESC Opening Plenary!

Cathy earned a Ph.D. in math from Harvard, was a postdoctoral fellow in the MIT math department, and a professor at Barnard College where she published a number of research papers in arithmetic algebraic geometry. She then switched over to the private sector, working as a quantitative analyst for the hedge fund D.E. Shaw in the middle of the credit crisis, and then for RiskMetrics, a risk software company that assesses risk for the holdings of hedge funds and banks. She left finance in 2011 and started working as a data scientist in the New York start-up scene, building models that predicted people’s purchases and clicks.

Join us at the MESC 2018 to hear her thought provoking and often humorous way of considering how big data and analytics impact all aspects of life, including policy approaches in publicly funded services.
